ELISE MOWER

The power that visual communication and materiality hold, in carving space for dialogue, observation and action is what I find truly exciting. Being half French and having grown up in Bangkok, my work often fosters and interrogates the strong interest I hold in people and cultures.

    What is Home? / 2023

A self-initiated publication that houses a collection of conversations exploring our notion of home, identity and culture from the perspective of people who have grown up amoungst multicultural worlds, like myself. I set out to open a verbal exchange which questions the traditional idea of home being four walls and a roof.

The feeling of rootlessness that comes with living highly mobile lives (as Third Culture Kids) is common, yet not very spoken about and often expressing itself through an identity crisis. Throughout Part 1, I photographed the exact moment when I asked each person ‘Where’s home to you?’, with the aim of conveying intial unmasked emotion, in accompaniment to the dialogue.  Alongisde the dialogue and photography, I created bespoke letterforms for each person's initial as a nod to their heritage and culture.

Part 1 - Over Teams with people from a Third Culture Kids Facebook group
Part 2 - In person with people in my entourage
